Course Description
Our training facilities include a realistic ship model which helps in providing a real life scenario for this course.
The 5 day course contains a large amount of practical fire fighting. Candidates will learn about and use several different types of extinguishers and will also carry out hose drills and wear breathing apparatus daily whilst gaining experience in fighting fires. There will be a number of casualty evacuation procedures in a series of escalating exercises designed to build confidence and teamwork. Candidates will also acquire an appreciation of command and control issues.
Students will gain confidence and competence with a focus on controlling fire fighting operations on board ship, organising & training fire parties, fixed systems and conducting fire investigations.
Learning objectives

- The principles of fire theory
- Theoretical and practical operations of fire extinguishing equipment
- Appreciation of the hazards involved in the firefighting at sea
- Fire prevention required on board ship
- Knowledge of first aid firefighting at sea using portable/semi-portable extinguishers
- Basic understanding of firefighting and fire party duties
- Understanding of fixed installations on ships at sea
- Search and rescue procedures and practical training exercise involving live fires
- The theory and use self-containes breathing apparatus sets
- Organising and planning of training for fire party team members
- Operational Procedures
- Casualty handling
Pre-Course Requirements
Candidates must have completed Basic Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (Section A-VI/1-2 of the STCW Code)
Participants must be medically fit. Candidates undergoing firefighting training will be required to complete and sign a confidential medical declaration to make us aware of any health problems, disabilities or injuries that we may need to consider whilst attending this physically demanding course.
Assessment and Certification
A STCW’95 approved certificate as per A-VI/3 from the code will be issued upon successful completion of the course.
E-Learning and Exit Examination
Please note that all exit exams are now conducted online the DGS website and can only be attempted once the candidates have complete the requisite e-learning hours on the DGS website.
Candidates are allowed a total of three attempts only. If you do not pass on the third attempt, that particular course has to be repeated after paying the full course fees again.
Note: As per DGS instructions it is mandatory to attempt the exit exams from the institute.
